List of Training Courses


Training Overview:
Fast Start Training is the first step for any new volunteer.

New Leader Essentials is the initial training for ALL adult leaders involved in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts or Venturing. (2 hours)

Cub Scout Leader Specific includes five different breakout sessions related to Cub Scouting for Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos Den Leaders and Assistants, Pack Committee Chairs, Committee Members and Cubmasters and Assistants (3 hours)

Boy Scout Leader Specific concentrates on troop operation (1 Day or 3 Evenings)

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills covers the outdoor skills expected of a First Class Scout (weekend)

Venturing Leader Specific is for all Venture leaders and Committee Members.


Training Requirements:

To be a trained as a Cub Scout leader, every leader needs New Leader Essentials and Cub Scout Leader Specific for the position they hold.

To be trained as a Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster, a leader needs New Leader Essentials and Boy Scout Leader Specific and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.

To be trained as a Venturing Crew Advisor or Assistant Advisor a leader needs New Leader Essentials and Venture Leader Specific Training.



Training Courses:

Fast Start Training
This is the first step for any new volunteer. It gives new leaders information on planning and conducting their first meeting. It also offers a quick and clear overview of the Scouting Program.

If you would prefer to take Fast Start training on videocassette, contact your unit leader or the Council Service Center.

New Leader Essentials
The one-time in your Scouting career training for all Scouting leaders no matter what your position. New parents might also benefit from this training whereby you will learn all of the basic facts and policies of the Boy Scouts of America. This is a prerequisite for all further Scouting training.

Cub Scout Leader Specific Training
This Training is for Tiger Cub, Cub Scout and Webelos Den Leaders and assistants, Cubmasters and assistants, and pack committee members. This training will build on Leader Essential Training and is tailored for your specific position within the pack.

Webelos Leader Outdoor Training
The outdoor activity pins are the most exciting for the Webelos Scouts to earn. Many adult leaders, however, are not well-versed in the skills needed to teach these activities. This course takes you through the different pins and helps you to understand and practice some of the skills that you will need. This course runs overnight from Saturday morning until Sunday noon.

Boy Scout Leader Specific and Outdoor Skills Training
This course offers all of the skills necessary to provide for the outdoor portion of the Scouting program. The course runs from Friday evening to Sunday noon and is a must for those who want to learn more about cooking, camping, woods tools, fire building, etc. This course also stresses the patrol method and how a troop operates in the outdoors.
This course is necessary to be a fully trained Boy Scout Leader, but all adult leaders are welcomed to take this course

BSA Climbing Instructor Training (CI 101)
Highly skilled training that meets the required standards to become or renew as a BSA qualified Climbing Instructor, able to deliver safe and exciting climbing and rappelling programs. You will learn the skills required to develop, set-up, and teach a unit climbing program. Topics include: Safety and Leadership, Equipment Management, Teaching Techniques, Ground School activities, Natural Site Selection, Toprope Anchors, and Emergency Procedures. Qual. is valid for two years with active participation.

Venture Leader Specific Training
For all Venture Leaders. You must complete New Leader Essentials first.

Other Venturing Training
Various supplemental training is avaialable to Venture Leaders throughout the year. Click the above link for information about current courses.

Baloo Training
A must for one person from every pack, this outdoor orientation will better prepare Cub Scout families for camping in Scout facilities or any other Scouting-approved facility. One person from each pack is required to have this training if the pack wants to do any outdoor camping. It briefs the attendee on the health and safety issues that every family should be aware of when camping according to BSA guidelines. It is a six-hour course with much hands-on participation.

Pow-Wow-University of Scouting
Supplemental training for all levels of Scouting, this day-long program is a smorgasboard of topics relating to Scouting. Sign up for as many courses as can fit in one day to learn about things that you need more information about or skills that you need to run your den, pack, troop or crew. This Scouting activity is one you will not want to miss.

Trainer Development Conference
To learn or refresh your training skills. For anyone interested in being a trainer at any level, this is great way to get started.

Troop Committee Challenge
This training has been developed to help troop committee members better understand their roles and responsibilities

Commissioner Basic Training
A good commissioner can make the difference between a pack, troop, crew or team that is struggling, and one that is ready to take on the world. Learn how to make this difference!

Wood Badge

This all new advanced training course is for all Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturing leaders as well as district and council volunteers.

Philmont Leadership Training
The Philmont Leadership Challenge will allow Wood Badge trained adults to fully integrate the lessons in their daily lives. The program is built around a series of modules emphasizing advanced outdoor skills, including COPE, Wilderness First Aid, Advanced GPS use, and Search and Rescue Techniques.
